These are the unsung heroes of Yanshan University— the security officers who safeguard the campus, the gardeners who preserve its beauty, the maintenance technicians who ensure everything functions smoothly, the cafeteria employees who prepare thousands of meals each day, the cleaners who keep learning spaces welcoming, the librarians who organize knowledge, and the administrative staff who quietly support students throughout their academic journey.
As an international student pursuing my Master’s degree in the School of Economics and Management, I have come to realize that a university’s true strength lies not only in its academic excellence but also in the dedication of the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
Before the First Class Begins
Long before the first lecture begins, the campus is already alive with activity.
As students prepare for another day of learning, maintenance teams inspect facilities, gardeners care for lawns and seasonal flowers, and cleaning staff ensure classrooms, libraries, and public spaces are ready to welcome thousands of students. Their work often begins before sunrise and continues quietly throughout the day, allowing academic life to proceed without interruption.
Many students pass these individuals every day without fully appreciating how much effort is required to maintain a clean, safe, and inspiring learning environment.
Creating a Safe Place to Learn
A successful university depends on more than excellent teaching— it depends on creating an environment where students feel secure and supported.
Security personnel are among the first people students encounter when entering campus. Beyond protecting university facilities, they provide directions to visitors, assist students during emergencies, and contribute to the orderly atmosphere that allows academic activities to flourish.
Their professionalism and commitment help create an environment where students can focus on learning with confidence and peace of mind.

For many students, the university cafeteria is much more than a dining hall. I t is a place where classmates meet, friendships grow, and conversations continue long after lectures end.

As an international student, I have especially appreciated the friendliness and patience shown by cafeteria staff, whose welcoming attitude makes every meal feel a little more like home.

The university library is often celebrated as the intellectual heart of campus, but its smooth operation depends upon librarians and technical staff whose work frequently goes unnoticed.

For graduate students conducting research, this quiet support becomes invaluable. Every successful literature review, thesis chapter, and research project benefits from their expertise and dedication.
