The People We Often Overlook

A university is usually recognized for its professors, researchers, laboratories, and talented students. Academic achievements, groundbreaking discoveries, and graduation ceremonies often make the headlines. Yet behind every successful lecture, every well-maintained classroom, and every peaceful campus is another group of people whose dedication is equally essential but rarely receives public attention.

These are the unsung heroes of Yanshan University— the security officers who safeguard the campus, the gardeners who preserve its beauty, the maintenance technicians who ensure everything functions smoothly, the cafeteria employees who prepare thousands of meals each day, the cleaners who keep learning spaces welcoming, the librarians who organize knowledge, and the administrative staff who quietly support students throughout their academic journey.

As an international student pursuing my Master’s degree in the School of Economics and Management, I have come to realize that a university’s true strength lies not only in its academic excellence but also in the dedication of the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Before the First Class Begins

Long before the first lecture begins, the campus is already alive with activity.

As students prepare for another day of learning, maintenance teams inspect facilities, gardeners care for lawns and seasonal flowers, and cleaning staff ensure classrooms, libraries, and public spaces are ready to welcome thousands of students. Their work often begins before sunrise and continues quietly throughout the day, allowing academic life to proceed without interruption.

Many students pass these individuals every day without fully appreciating how much effort is required to maintain a clean, safe, and inspiring learning environment.

Creating a Safe Place to Learn

A successful university depends on more than excellent teaching— it depends on creating an environment where students feel secure and supported.

Security personnel are among the first people students encounter when entering campus. Beyond protecting university facilities, they provide directions to visitors, assist students during emergencies, and contribute to the orderly atmosphere that allows academic activities to flourish.

Their professionalism and commitment help create an environment where students can focus on learning with confidence and peace of mind.

The Cafeteria: Serving More Than Meals

For many students, the university cafeteria is much more than a dining hall. I t is a place where classmates meet, friendships grow, and conversations continue long after lectures end.

Behind every meal are dedicated cafeteria employees who prepare food, maintain

hygiene standards, and serve thousands of students with remarkable efficiency each day. Their work requires precision, teamwork, and consistency, ensuring that students have access to nutritious meals throughout the academic year.

As an international student, I have especially appreciated the friendliness and patience shown by cafeteria staff, whose welcoming attitude makes every meal feel a little more like home.

The Library’s Quiet Guardians

The university library is often celebrated as the intellectual heart of campus, but its smooth operation depends upon librarians and technical staff whose work frequently goes unnoticed.

They organize collections, manage digital resources, assist students with research, and ensure that academic materials remain accessible to everyone. Whether helping students locate books or maintaining electronic databases, their contributions directly support learning and research.

For graduate students conducting research, this quiet support becomes invaluable. Every successful literature review, thesis chapter, and research project benefits from their expertise and dedication.

Keeping Innovation Running

Modern universities rely on sophisticated technology to support education and research. Information technology specialists, laboratory technicians, and facility managers ensure that classrooms remain connected, research equipment functions properly, and digital learning platforms operate efficiently.

Although their work often remains invisible, it enables students and faculty members to conduct experiments, deliver presentations, access online resources, and collaborate across disciplines without interruption.

In today’s digital age, these professionals have become essential partners in higher

education.

Supporting International Students

One of the qualities that impressed me most after arriving in China was the willingness of university staff to help international students adapt to a new environment.

Whether assisting with registration procedures, residence arrangements, health services, academic documentation, or everyday questions, administrative staff demonstrate patience, professionalism, and genuine hospitality.

Moving to another country inevitably brings uncertainty, but the support provided by university employees helps transform unfamiliar surroundings into a welcoming academic community.

For many international students, these early acts of kindness leave lasting impressions long after graduation.

Every Role Matters

One of the greatest lessons I have learned at Yanshan University is that excellence is never achieved by individuals working alone. It is the result of collaboration among people performing different responsibilities with equal commitment.

Professors educate. Researchers innovate. Students learn.

But alongside them, countless staff members create the conditions that make education possible every single day.

Together, they form a community built on cooperation, mutual respect, and shared responsibility.

Reflecting China’s Commitment to Educational Excellence

China has invested significantly in developing world-class universities, modern campuses, and high-quality educational environments. While much attention is given to academic achievements and scientific breakthroughs, these accomplishments are supported by dedicated professionals who ensure that universities function efficiently and sustainably.

At Yanshan University, this commitment is reflected not only in modern facilities and educational resources but also in the professionalism and dedication of the people who care for the campus and its students.

Their contributions embody the spirit of service that underpins educational excellence.

A Lesson in Gratitude

Studying abroad has taught me many lessons beyond my academic field. One of the most important is learning to appreciate the people whose efforts often go unnoticed.

The smile of a cafeteria employee during breakfast, the guidance of a security officer, the assistance of an administrative staff member, the careful work of a librarian, or the dedication of a cleaner quietly maintaining the campus— all these moments remind us that education is supported by an entire community.

These individuals may not appear on graduation stages or receive academic awards, yet their work shapes the daily experiences of every student who walks through the university gates.

The Heart of Every Great University

When people remember Yanshan University, they often think of its distinguished faculty, innovative research, beautiful campus, and talented students. These achievements deserve recognition. Yet behind every success story is another story—one of dedication, humility, and service.

The unsung heroes of Yanshan University demonstrate that education is a collective effort. Through their professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment, they create an environment where thousands of students can pursue knowledge, develop their talents, and prepare for the future.

As I continue my academic journey in China, I carry with me not only the lessons learned in classrooms but also a deep appreciation for the people whose quiet dedication makes those classrooms possible. Their contributions remind us that the true strength of a university is found not only in its buildings or achievements, but in the people who serve its community every day with pride and purpose.
