PM Shehbaz Sharif Directs Acceleration of DISCO Privatization Process, Says No Compromise on Transparency

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired an important review meeting on the privatization of power distribution companies (DISCOs), during which the progress of the privatization process was thoroughly reviewed.

Addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the privatization of loss-making state-owned enterprises remains one of the government’s top priorities and directed that the process be accelerated. He emphasized that all stages of privatization must be completed with complete transparency to further strengthen investor confidence.

The Prime Minister also stressed the need to establish a strong and effective regulatory framework following the privatization of DISCOs to ensure the protection of consumers’ interests.

During the briefing, participants were informed that the first phase of privatization would include the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO), Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO), and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO).

The meeting was told that Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the privatization of these three companies have already been published in both national and international newspapers. Additionally, the Cabinet Committee on Privatization has approved the transaction structure for these entities.

The briefing further revealed that roadshows are being organized this month to attract investors, while special international roadshows are also being arranged for investors from Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and China.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Leghari, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Privatization Muhammad Ali, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, and other senior government officials.
