Tarbela Ghazi (Correspondent): The Auxiliary Spillway of Tarbela Dam was opened for the first time during the 2026 flood season at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, following which an increase in the discharge of water into the Indus River has been recorded.

According to a notification issued by WAPDA, after the opening of the spillway, the water flow in the Indus River downstream of Tarbela Dam is being maintained between 220,000 and 230,000 cusecs. WAPDA authorities clarified that despite the current discharge, no flood situation has emerged in the downstream areas, as low-level flooding in the Indus River downstream of Tarbela Dam begins at a flow of 250,000 cusecs.

However, as a precautionary measure, the district administrations of Haripur, Tehsil Ghazi, Attock, Topi, and Swabi, along with other relevant institutions, have been informed of the situation.

The notification advised the general public to avoid unnecessary movement along the banks of the Indus River, in low-lying areas, and near the water flow. The public was also advised to prevent children from going near the river and to follow the instructions of the local administration in case of any emergency.

WAPDA has also directed the relevant institutions to take all necessary precautionary measures to protect public lives and property and prevent any untoward incident during the period of increased water flow.
