In a unique and environment-friendly way of celebrating Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, renowned non-governmental organization Handam Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to making the country greener by planting 50,000 mangrove seeds along the coastal area of Sheikh Kario Zero Point in Badin.
The initiative was organized with the aim of protecting the marine and atmospheric environment from pollution, preserving coastal areas, preventing environmental degradation, and creating a cleaner and healthier future for coming generations.
The planting campaign was attended by Deputy Commissioner Badin Yasir Bhatti as the chief guest, while Assistant Commissioner Rajesh Kumar was also present on the occasion. Deputy Commissioner Yasir Bhatti, Chief Executive Officer of Handam Foundation Shaukat Ali Soomro, and other participants personally planted mangrove seeds as part of the plantation drive.
Later, they inspected the mangrove forests planted in previous years and appreciated the efforts of Handam Foundation for promoting coastal conservation.
Talking to the media, Deputy Commissioner Yasir Bhatti said that Independence Day celebrations are not limited to hoisting the national flag or organizing ceremonies; rather, protecting the land, coastline, and environment of the country is also a practical expression of patriotism.
He said that planting trees is a continuous source of benefit and a guarantee for environmental sustainability. He added that mangrove plantation in coastal areas is a difficult, challenging, and labor-intensive process that requires dedication and patience.
The Deputy Commissioner appreciated the services of Handam Foundation in promoting mangrove growth in the coastal areas of Badin and termed their efforts a source of inspiration for others. He said that the district administration has stood alongside Handam Foundation from the beginning and will continue to provide all possible support for protecting the coastal environment, preventing sea erosion, and achieving the vision of a greener Pakistan.
Speaking on the occasion, CEO Handam Foundation Shaukat Ali Soomro said that the organization has so far planted more than 250,000 mangrove plants and seeds in the coastal areas of Badin, with a success rate of 75 to 80 percent.
He said it is encouraging that the previously planted mangroves are now producing millions of new seeds, allowing coastal forests to expand naturally.
He highlighted that mangroves play a vital role in preventing coastal erosion, protecting marine life, maintaining ecological balance, reducing air pollution, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Shaukat Ali Soomro reaffirmed that Handam Foundation will continue its plantation campaigns with full dedication to make Pakistan’s coastlines greener, safer, and free from pollution.
On Independence Day, the planting of thousands of mangrove seeds along the coastline conveyed the message that a green Pakistan, protected coastlines, and a clean environment are essential for a strong, prosperous, and bright future. Protecting the country’s land, atmosphere, and natural resources is one of the best expressions of love for the nation.
